Warlingham Wildcats first Senior Ladies Match

Warly Wildcats give a good account of themselves!

Warlingham’s new Women’s and Girls Section played their first ever Senior Ladies match on Sunday at their Hamsey Green home against a very experienced Guildford Gazelles team who have played together for some years and are third in their league. In the freezing conditions and, despite their inexperience playing together, the Wildcats put up a spirited performance but were unable to prevent the visitors running in several tries in the first half.

After the interval Warlingham played much better and good breaks from Emma James and Julia Rooke made ground for the hosts. Captain Sophie York also took on her opposite number and impressed as did Olivia Mamode. Alice Hardisty and Jahrusalem Simmons tackled well and snuffed out several attacks from the accomplished Guildford back line. Further scores followed by the visitors but, determined to get on the score sheet, Warlingham pack drove at the Guildford line and the diminutive scrum half, Jemma Upton managed to squeeze through the melee and was driven over the line for a well deserved team try.

Women’s Coach Craig McIntosh said, “This was first outing for some of the ladies in match play and they haven’t played together before. They gave it their best and they’ll learn a lot from the experience.”

Warlingham host the “Inner Warrior RFU Campaign” on Sunday 14th Jan for 11-18 year olds and Wednesday 17th Jan for 18+ year olds and players of all standard, and new players, are warmly welcomed.
