Local rivals provide good workout for League season ahead. Report by Peter Upton

Twickenham may have staged their Aviva Premiership London double header but, in a smaller way, Warlingham did the same on Saturday by their 1st XV playing Purley John Fisher and their 2nd XV playing Old Midwives, both local derbies.

Hooker Jonny Fox was sidelined with a broken nose and the Warlingham scrum faltered for a while and, despite playing in a lower league, Purley John Fisher showed they were up to the mark when they shot into the lead with a well taken try after a steady scrum near the Warlingham line. This woke up the home side who
effected a clean 'catch and drive' from a line out and prop Kieran Scutt barged over for the first try converted from the touchline by full back Joe McEvoy.

Whilst Warlingham were sitting on their laurels PJF immediately struck back with a shimmy through the centre for their second try converted by fly half Simon Martin. From a quick throw-in Warlingham centre Brad Saffery made a half break, passed to Harry Wrightson who finished off the move with a second unconverted try. The match stayed at twelve apiece until half time when lock Neil Robson took a neat line of running, passed to a chasing Saffery who went in for the third try converted by Guy Maynard. A forward rush by Warlingham resulted in winger Jack
Atkinson finding the ball and scampering over for Warlingham's fourth try. PJF had a penalty in front of the posts, spurned the kick, caught the hosts napping and collected their third try converted by Martin.

Warlingham's superior fitness came to the fore and a solo try from McEvoy, followed by a hint of fly half Alex Glover 'chip ' chase' magic saw Maynard gather and feed a perfect pass back to Glover who scored Warlingham's sixth and final try. After the match Head Coach Ben Stobart said, "PJF came here looking for an upset and we did well to remain calm and overcome their determination. This was a tough workout for us."

Meanwhile Warlingham's 2nd XV put up a spirited fight against a strong Old Midwives XV containing a number of their
first choice players, but lost 24 points to 61 points. Warlingham captain, Andy Cox said, "This was another tough
outing for us but will stand us in good stead for our first league game against next Saturday.
