On Saturday 4th July Warlingham Rugby Club and Hillcrest Netball Club celebrated thirty years of partnership.

Thirty Years ago the Croydon Advertiser included an article from Warlingham Rugby Club and Hillcrest Netball Club. It quoted Rugby Club President, Roger Quaile:

“We have tolerated ladies in the bar; we have welcomed them in the kitchen but until now we have never let them have much say in the running of the club ……things are changing”.

Well things have certainly changed thirty years later!

On Saturday 4th July Warlingham Rugby Club and Hillcrest Netball Club celebrated thirty years of partnership and this time a whole family were in the kitchen; dad, mum and children put on a VIP lunch for current Presidents along with committee members and players past and present all sharing stories of thirty years together.

Celebrations continued on a beautiful summer’s day with the rugby men taking to the netball court, challenging the ladies in a tournament. Players ranged from under 16’s, to senior and “Legends” teams from both clubs. One of our legends, Ron Head MBE, will be 66 in October and still regularly plays rugby as an active member of the club.

There was fun for all the family with a massive Zorbit inflatable obstacle course, bouncy castle and other games for the children to enjoy all day.

Celebrations continued into the evening with live music performed by Carbon Skyline and money was raised for the clubs’ chosen charities, the Lily Foundation and the PSP Association (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy).

Warlingham Chairman Peter Mattison said:

“What a brilliant day! I’m really delighted we all celebrated our special anniversary in style. Our partnership of rugby and netball works well and continues to help both clubs thrive.”

Hillcrest President Clare Nicholls said of the partnership:

“I think the combining of the two clubs has been of great benefit as it has brought both clubs and families together”.

And long may it continue!
