Warlingham 13pts -v- Charlton Park - 15pts

For the final home league game of the season, Warlingham invited all their youth coaches for the pre-match lunch and the hundred or so diners were also joined by former Warlingham youth player and England Ladies Rugby winger, Kay Wilson. Miss Wilson, currently at Bristol University, is in training for the Women's Rugby World Cup later this year but took time out to support her former rugby club. She said, "It's great to come back to Warlingham where I played junior rugby. I have many happy memories of the club and the Youth coaches in particular do a marvelous job."

With at least one hand on the League Championship Charlton Park came to Hamsey Green as the very firm favourites against a Warlingham side who have injury problems and are in the relegation zone. But form doesn't take account of the sheer cussedness and determination shown by a team fighting off relegation woes. Warlingham, being in the highest league in the area, were desperate to stave off relegation to remain in the higher echelons.

An early easy penalty miss by Charlton Park could have cost the visitors the top league spot and Warlingham, led by No 8 Tom Street and captain Zac King, took yards off the visitors with their pick 'n drive tactics. When winger Jon Osborne zipped down the wing a score looked on, but Park defended and from a loose ball their centre outflanked the defence to score Park's first try against the run of play. The easy conversion was missed - again likely to be costly. With flanker John Dowling tackling everything in a red Park shirt, the visitors were unable to string phases of play together and Warlingham's pack took control. Scrum half Steven Murtagh was deemed to be held up over the try line but the ensuing scrum saw Street barge through the defence to equal the scores. Park were shell shocked and, when hooker Alex Nunn made good ground up the centre, support came from his fellow prop Kieran Scutt and lock Neil Robson. The attack was snuffed out and when Park were awarded an easy penalty the ball rattled the posts but failed to go over them. After the break Warlingham had the elements with them and used the advantage intelligently with outside half Harry Wrightson kicking deep into Park territory. The home side pack were akin to demented bulls, charging repeatedly at the Park defence and were justly rewarded with a penalty in front of the posts and centre Brad Saffery made no mistake in converting. As is often the case, Warlingham relaxed a whisper and from a quick penalty Park scored under the posts and regained the lead with the conversion.

Warlingham's forwards were not done and when Street emerged from a maul with ball under arm, he scampered over for his second try and the lead was regained. Park were furious with themselves and threw all but the kitchen sink at Warlingham and, despite a try-saving tackle from winger Sandy Kenny, they were awarded a very dubious penalty in front of the sticks. They made the most of it and, for the third and final time, took the lead.
So Warlingham took just the one bonus point from the game and Park take the League title, but both their players and supporters agreed that, on the day, Warlingham were the better side and deserved more from the match. After the game, Warlingham's Head coach, Ben Stobart, said, "All the guys put in a tremendous performance today and gave the league leaders a fright. Park are a class outfit, but we played our hearts out and were unlucky not to scrape the win."

Warlingham final league game on Saturday is away against second placed Maidstone, but unless Lewes, who are one place below them, win by more than sixty points at Crowborough, they are safe from relegation but will need to focus over the summer to stay in this league.
