Depleted 1st XV competes to the end but lose a close battle

Shorn of ten regular players Warlingham bloodied a number of debutants for their first ever game
against newly promoted Andover. The home pack turned out to be a well-drilled outfit and their three
tries came from their forward dominated game plan which forced Warlingham into a number of costly penalties.
New prop Marlon Rainford made several route-one charges supported by the ubiquitous flanker John Dowling
who tackled like a dervish. A brilliant solo try from winger Jack Atkinson, also converted by him, brought the
visitors' first points but with the Andover forwards gaining control Warlingham were on the rack time and again
and were fortunate to keep level with two penalties from Atkinson after Andover had scored their try and two penalties.

With the slope in their favour the second half looked promising for Warlingham but Andover stuck to their forward tactics
and took a commanding lead again. Warlingham lock Ben Warman, playing his first game with the senior side, made his
presence felt and scrum half Steven Murtagh was a nuisance to the hosts all afternoon. Back-rower David Thornton scored
Warlingham's second try and Atkinson's conversion attempt bounced off the top of the post and was adjudged to have been
missed. That decision deprived Warlingham of a losing bonus point which may prove vital in the league placings when the
season comes to an end. Head Coach Paddy Dennien said after the game, "Credit to Andover who imposed themselves on
us all through the game. The new players acquitted themselves admirably but the late changes meant our game plans weren't
clinical enough. We'll put that right over the next few weeks."

Next Saturday Warlingham host London Cornish at their Hamsey Green grounds and all spectators will be warmly welcomed to watch
the club game followed by the England -v- Australia Rugby World Cup clash afterwards on the Club's big screens.
