Effingham & Leatherhead- 11pts -v- Warlingham 9pts

Warlingham's four game winning streak ended abruptly when the lively Effingham & Leatherhead back line proved to be too much of a handful for the visitors. The freezing conditions kept the spectators shivering but the on-field activity warmed up nicely with Warlingham pressing right from the kick off. Tragically a home player suffered a serious ankle injury which caused a long delay and Warlingham went off the boil.

However, fly half Joe McEvoy kicked two early penalties to give Warlingham a platform but the writing was on the wall whenever
the elusive Effingham wingers got the ball. On every occasion they jinxed through tackles before being hauled down. A penalty
miss by the home side suggested in may be Warlingham's day but an electric run from a home winger set up a try for their back row.
The conversion was missed and Warlingham then defended efficiently with flanker John Dowling and prop Simon Townsend snuffing out attacks. Warlingham's Alex Skinner chased down a McEvoy kick and a forward rush put Warlingham over the try line only for the referee to adjudge it was held up. Effingham cleared their lines and the danger receded. The referee was obliged to wave his yellow card at one player apiece and the game was at stale mate until half time.

Warlingham's concentration slipped for a while and two infringements meant two successful penalties to put Effingham's nose in front. Despite frantic efforts, particularly by No 8 David Thornton and flanker Zack King, right up to the end of the game, Warlingham were unable to breach the home defence. A desperate last ditch shot at a drop goal from McEvoy sailed wide and the referee signaled no side. Warlingham head coach Paddy Dennien said, "We didn't play well or impose ourselves on this game and Effingham & Leatherhead were obviously up for the win."

Warlingham's next game is at home on 5th December against London Exiles who have improved their performances in recent times.

Other results: Effingham & Leatherhead II XV 24pts - Warlingham II XV - 19pts; Warlingham III XV 29pts - Old Emanual - 0pts
