Warlingham are staging youth rugby open days at their Hamsey Green grounds over the next two Sundays, hoping to attract as many local youngsters who want to give the latest Olympic sport a try.

Warlingham’s mini and junior sections cater for boys and girls aged 6 to 10, when they play non-contact tag rugby, and boys from 11 to 18.

The club has three or four coaches working with each year group, and manages to field two teams in many age group.

The open days, from 10am on September 6 and September 13 at the club’s grounds off Limpsfield Road, will welcome all-comers, whether they have played the game before, are complete novices, or perhaps are soon moving to a rugby-playing school and want to work on their skills and fitness.

“We have a very successful youth section at Warlingham,” said Chris Dibble, the club’s youth section chairman, “with our under-18s having won the Surrey championship last season and the under-16s winning their division of the county league.”

Recent graduates of Warlingham’s Academy include Chris Robshaw and Kyle Traynor, who made their international debuts for England and Scotland in the summer, and Tim Catling, who scored three tries in last season’s Varsity match.

Dibble and Warlingham‘s team of coaches are on the look-out for more talent. “We know we cannot take our eye off the ball and relax,” Dibble said, “and our youth squads are the life-blood of the club.
“Rugby’s a great winter sport for athletes or swimmers who want to work on their fitness and speed, the spirit in the teams is always terrific, and rugby caters for kids of all shapes and sizes.”

Warlingham are again planning special attractions for their youngsters during the coming weeks. In the past couple of years, thanks to sponsors Crest Nicholson, Warlingham’s young players benefited from coaching sessions with former England head coach Andy Robinson, who is now in charge of the Scotland team.

With England hosting the 2015 Rugby World Cup and Rugby 7s on the verge of being included in future Olympic Games, Warlingham are keen to provide the best coaching and facilities in the area.

Youth rugby is played at Warlingham RFC, Hamsey Green, Limpsfield Road, CR6 9RB every Sunday morning, starting at 10am. Phone 01883 622825 for more details.
